Maggie and I grabbed a bus to Viana. Her knee was swollen and my hand was still not working well enough to use walking sticks. The bus dropped us off in Viana in an unfamiliar place along the highway outside the high city walls. We walked along the highway until I realized I just couldn’t make my way to the apartment and gave Jose a call. Within three minutes he was walking towards us and I realized I was just one block from the apartment but on the other side. I asked what happened to the bus stop and he explained to me they were working on the road and had moved it. Upon my arrival in Viana, I was sad to find my favorite restaurant did not make it through Covid. So many things have changed in two years. But we found good food right next to the church entrance. Viana was beautiful as always but I did not spend much time in the village. Apartamento Los Borgia was comfortable and it was so good to see Jose’s smiling face again. I got some laundry done and the next morning the taxi picked us up at 9 AM for the ride to Burgos.
At Burgos, we slept at hotel Meson del CID. One of our rooms had a problem and so they gave me an apartment. Paula and Gil volunteered to take the apartment . The hotel then comped me a beautiful suite with an incredible view of the Cathedral. Since Sandra had not been happy with the lodging the night before, I gave her the suite. Most people had a view of the cathedral and this hotel was as close to the cathedral as you could get.
I spent a couple of hours in the cathedral. That cathedral is just spectacular! They’ve done a lot more restoration work since the last time I saw it and I wish that I had had more time to spend inside.
It was actually hot in the afternoon. I tried to get the air conditioning to work but discovered that it had not been turned on yet for the season. So I took off all my clothes, wrung out a towel in cold water, and took a nap with the towel on top of me to cool me off.
I had a wonderful dinner and a restful night.
This morning at eight the taxi arrives to deliver us to Leon. I’m feeling homesick, which is strange, and a bit overwhelmed at all I have to do when I get back home. Mom passed away right before my trip, and there is just so much to weed through. I was hoping to have time to think about my relationship with her and why it was so broken and maybe do some healing. But I’ve been too busy to think about those things, so I’m considering canceling the autumn trip and taking time for myself to wrap up all the things that need to be done at home and spend some time alone
My left wrist is healing quickly though it is still quite sore when I move in certain directions. It makes me nervous about using a walking stick. I’m not sure I can hold one yet and I sure do not want to fall again. My right hand is still quite bruised but getting better every day
Anyway that’s it for now. I am sorry the photos are not in order. It’s just impossible to blog on my phone. I will post more photos once I am home.
If you are planning to Camino, I strongly suggest you book your rooms at least through Pamplona. It is a busy trail this year.they were probably 75 to 100 people in line for the cathedral when I went back to my room last night. Remember, it’s a Holy Year
