We can easily get by on €20 or less per day if we picnic or cook for ourselves.

I hope this helps someone work on their budget. As we buy more items I will post prices.

Bon provecho!

The Seu in Manresa

After sleeping in this morning, we went for a walk to explore the town. We found the local TI (tourist information) where we picked up info on Semana Santa. Most of the festivities begin tomorrow with a Dance of the Dead tomorrow morning I am looking forward to seeing. There will be processions all day finishing at 11 pm. Today, locals were busy getting ready at the Seu, and we were lucky to see the process.

Breakfast!

How strange that my body insists on rising before 3 am in Spain even though I haven’t slept in 30-some hours and though it’s 6 pm at home in Oregon. But a blazing headache and a bone dry mouth woke me up around midnight thirty and try though I may, sleep just won’t come.

After listening to a couple of healing meditations and still unable to sleep I decide to bite the bullet and get up. Maybe I’ll take a siesta this afternoon.

Above is a photo of my 3 am breakfast. An Americano coffee ☕️,which actually cured my headache (maybe it was caffeine and sugar withdrawals), some beautiful strawberries 🍓 given to us by the landlord, a tub of plain yogurt, and 4 Marias, which are a lovely, inexpensive digestive cookie we enjoy in Spain. I added a thin slice of Gouda 🧀 cheese and I’m feeling fine. Joe is still sleeping in his room and these Spanish doors are loud so I’m going to blog, read for an hour or two, maybe do some yoga, and try to be quiet.

Today we will look at our budget, find an ATM, and get groceries. I also need to wash my travel clothes. Other than that it will be a rest/recovery day.

Our apartment is modest but clean, affordable, and convenient. The landlord told us that in 10 years he has only rented to Americans 3 times. He says they prefer expensive hotels. Not these Americans!  The way to budget in Spain is to share an apartment, cook your own meals, and it feels as comfortable as home. Here are some photos. I apology for the mess but we had just gotten in and had thrown things around as we began unpacking. We paid 366 Euros for 5 nights - that is 73 Euros per night for a three bedroom apartment.  Six pilgrims could split that and it’s amazingly affordable..

Anyway we are happy and cozy here  there is a nice hot shower, two terraces, and it’s fully furnished with dishes, towels, and drinks/snacks.  Life is good!

More later as I use this blog to document my travels for myself as well as for you.

Love, Annie

PS:  I’m sorry the photos are above.  I’m working from my phone and they refused to go below the blog

The Dreaded 13th

Joe just mentioned to me that it’s been the 13th for a long long time, and that’s the way it feels. It is now 7:50 PM in Manresa Spain. It’s 10:50 AM in Portland Oregon on the 13th. We got into Manresa about 5 PM. we woke up on Tuesday morning at 2 AM. So far we have been awake 33 hours with about three hours sleep on and off. I feel like a zombie. We had a five hour layover at JFK and then another 2 hour layover in Madrid before catching a flight to Barcelona. That was funny because everybody was at one gate and at the last minute they told us we had to go to a different gate so everybody on the plane ran a race to get to the gate and get on the plane. It was a bumpy ride into Barcelona. After we reach Barcelona we got on a train to Sants station and from there on another train to Manresa. It’s been a long freaking day!

Joe is telling me I’m not too old to do this but my body is telling me he’s a liar liar pants on fire!

We arrived at our apartment and the owner met us with the keys. It is modest but perfect for our needs with three bedrooms, a dining room, a bathroom with nice hot water, and a good kitchen. Yay

Yay

We both were zonked but we needed food so we did a quick walk to the grocery store and brought home just enough food to make hamburgers for dinner  I love the prices in Spain! I bought two big hamburger patties, hamburger buns, a loaf of bread freshly baked, cheese, olives stuffed with anchovies, potato chips, rice pudding, mustard, mayonnaise and all of that was under €15.

I will post photos tomorrow but right now I’m going to curl up and take a good long sleep.

That’s all for tonight.

My eyes won’t stay open

Love, Annie

One More Sleep and Mr. Toad’s ICY Ride

Cameron and Michael showed up about 10 AM this morning and we headed to Portland pick up Joe. The road was clear until about 1 mile before Joe‘s house when all of a sudden it was like we were up at Sequoia National Park during ski season. There was so much snow and so much traffic!  Bumper to bumper and traveling 2 mph!  We carefully wound our way down into the gully where Joe lives and I would say the snow was at least 6 to 8 inches deep. Then we headed down Burnside and after a long slow 1 mile ride that took 15 minutes, the road was closed and we had to turn around and go back. Then we took a turn off on the road that Joe and I called Walker Lady Road. Well, we drove that road for about a mile and then we had to stop turn around and go back. Joe said it was like a pinball machine. We get to the top of the hill and then have to turn around and go back and everybody was doing it. I was waving at people as we went by trying to tell them to turn around and my son was telling me to stop. Ha ha Ha . I guess that’s the mom gene in me.

We ended up driving to Highway 217 all the way around back to I-5. A trip that usually takes about 25 minutes took us an hour and a half !!

We finally arrived at the hotel which my son had booked for us and it really is quite a beautiful little suite. We are now resting and waiting for our 3 AM departure. Life is good! Annie

Two More Sleeps

Tonight I realized with a start that I leave tomorrow. Well, not really. I’m going to Portland tomorrow to spend the night in a hotel because I need to be at the airport at 3 AM the following morning to fly to Madrid.

The thing giving me the biggest headache is trying to figure out the math to do the QR code. You are supposed to submit it 48 hours before your arrival in Madrid. It’s like one of those word questions you used to get in fourth grade math. “When it’s 12 PM in Portland it is 9 PM in Madrid. If you have to send a Code 48 hours before you arrive in Madrid, what time must you submit the code in Portland? “

It hurts my brain.

Anyway I think I have figured it out with some help from my son.

The past week has been crazy, trying to get ready, dealing with mom’s death, calling Social Security and Cal Pers, notifying family and friends, settling in my house sitters, packing and keeping the weight of my pack manageable.

I’ve had to re-pack twice but am confident now that I’ve done all I can. Time to let go and relax.

I will do my best to blog as often as possible.

Camino, here I come!

Stay tuned!

Love 💕

Spraying my Gear for Bedbugs

Today was a nice warm sunny day, so I hung my sleeping bag and backpack on the line Joe put up, and sprayed everything down good with permethrin.

I sprayed the OUTSIDE of my sleeping bag; the part that does not touch my skin.

I sprayed BOTH the inside and outside of my backpack.

I sprayed both items until they were good and wet then let them dry in the sun.

Sorry. I posted videos but they didn't load.
I'll try again tomorrow.

Gloanna Henderson - RIP

Mom and I at my son, Samu's, wedding.
A happy memory.

Gloanna Henderson

My little mom passed away on Thursday, March 31, at 8:20 in the morning.

It was so difficult to watch Mom shrink into nothing and become so weak and so feeble. She was always such a beautiful little woman with impeccable taste. Her hair and makeup always done, she was always "put together." She had four closets full of beautiful clothes, many still with tags on them. I'm sure there were close to 75 pair of shoes in those closets - expensive shoes. She told me once that she got one pair of shoes when she was a girl and they had to last all year, and that was why she thought she loved shoes. I teased her and called her Imelda Marcos.

When it came to her houses, no house she owned was ever finished. She reminded me of the widow who kept up construction on the Winchester Mystery house until the day she died. Mom was always putting in carpet, doors, windows, blinds, curtains, tile, paint... and on and on and on. She could never be satisfied. People would oooh and aaaah when they came into her house and instead of saying thank you, she'd recite a litany of what was wrong with the house.
Her house, like her children,
were never good enough for her.

People did love her. She had a lot of friends. They called her "Glo" or "Glodie."  She was funny and animated around others. She was invited to dinner parties, and was good company as long as the the talk didn't turn to politics or religion. She loved to bake pies for people, and the whole family looked forward to her Christmas caramel corn - the best we've ever tasted!

Mom was the most popular girl in high school and she married the most popular boy. Both were deeply broken and I was the result. He was beautiful and wild, and ended up in jail. He was in jail when I was born and the marriage didn't last. After their divorce, she married a policeman, a strict disciplinarian. I think he was more like her father may have been for her growing up (although he was a wonderful father to ME), and my brother was the broken result of that marriage.

Mom played cards twice a month with friends she had known since kindergarten. She had many friends . . . until she woke up one day and decided she didn’t like anything or anyone or anything about life.

From Day One, Mom and I have been opposites, like oil and water.  Maybe that’s why she gave me away. She never left the country, and I love to travel. She was a good girl growing up. I was a wild child. She was obedient. I challenged authority. Her clothes were always perfect. I’m pretty low maintenance. She was cold and distant. I'm very affectionate. We were nothing alike - and those differences were the source of many conflicts.

The truth is, mom was not much of a mother. Though she never abused me physically, there was a huge emotional void; she just didn’t seem to be able to show affection. She handed me over to her parents when I was three years old and moved away with her new husband and child. Her parents, who I called "Ma" and "Pa" reared me.  I had 13 living grandparents in that little town - grandparents, greats, great-greats, and steps - and I bounced around between them. And even though it was rich as hell, it never quite made up for my feelings of abandonment. My earliest memory of my mother is me throwing a tantrum at the airport as she boarded a plane without me. It was the one and only time in my life my grandfather spanked me, simply because I wouldn't stop screaming.

I have never felt my mother cared for me at all. Maybe I reminded her of my father. I don't know. Nothing I did was ever good enough for her. She did not have time for me.  When I was seven years old I came down with spinal meningitis and I was in isolation in the hospital for several weeks. My mother never came to visit. Not once. I had an emergency appendectomy when I was 12 and was in the hospital again for days. She didn't come.

Having three sons of my own, I cannot imagine her distancing. I just don’t get it. And it’s been a source of pain, a tender place, my whole life  Why wasn’t I not good enough for her? That has always been a mystery.

So . . . this is a strange type of grief.

 I’m grieving, it’s true.

But it’s not so much for the mother I had.

Rather, it’s for the mother I wanted and didn’t have.

Jennifer Veal said it best.  “ It took a long time for regular grief to sink in because I’d already grieved her so many times while she was alive. I’d grieved the mother she’d never be. I’d grieved our relationship, grieved my childhood. Our life together had been one of pain and loss that required so much healing that by the time I actually said goodbye to her, there wasn’t much left to say.”

Mom and I talked a little bit as she lay dying. We tried to reconnect. I asked her one time why we always bumped heads. She smiled and said, "It was stress . . . stress brought out the rage."

I wasn’t sure if it was the morphine talking, if she was talking about me, or if she was talking about herself.

Toward the end of her days, I told Mom I loved her each night before bed, and she responded in kind. I think we were both trying to make up for lost time. I believe she did love me, in her own broken way. I'm sad that maybe SHE didn't feel loved as she was growing up. A difficult thought, since both her mother and father were such great parents to me. But mom was the eldest child and from what she's told me, did most of the housework and cooking and took care of the other two children while her parents worked. That was a lot of responsibility. Maybe they didn't have time for her. Maybe she just didn't learn to love. I just don't know, and now I guess I'll never know.

One night, I asked her if she could share any good  memories of her childhood and her parents. She couldn't answer. She just had a blank look on her face - then a puzzled look.  It was like she was combing her mind, combing her mind, but just couldn't think of any thing to share. She had a few cousins she really enjoyed spending time with, but couldn't think of one good time with her parents. That felt so sad.

Oddly, as she weakened Mom became kinder, sweeter, easier to be around .  We still had disagreements but they were fewer than usual, short-lived, and not as volatile.

Did I love her? I have asked myself that question daily, and the answer is yes, I loved her. I love her deeply for giving me life. This wonderful, brilliant life that has been so rich and full of love and adventure. I loved her for leaving me with a beautiful roof over my head, financially sound. Mostly, I loved her because without her I wouldn’t have been born and wouldn’t have had the opportunity to know my three incredible sons, their fathers, and my grandchildren.

While caring for mom, there were days I felt like an empty shell, but now I am free of this responsibility, free to get back out into nature, back onto the Camino, visiting my old friends, and making new friends. I’m ready to rekindle joy!

An old friend once said to me, “Life is good! Even when it’s shitty, it’s good!”

He was right. Life IS good. And I want more of it. So I’m feeling relief that this journey with Mom is over, and at the same time, trying not to feel guilty for feeling that relief.

I know there is a more of a lesson here for me - as my heart softens towards my mother. I’m looking forward to a good long walk, and the time to contemplate the whats and whys and hows of it all.

For now, I will dig through old photos and memories, searching for the good, and grieve for the relationship we never had.

And at the same time, I will bless her for teaching me forgiveness, compassion, and yes, even love.

Buen Camino,

Annie

13 More Sleeps

Update:
The nurses tell me mom is in her final days to a week. For the first time I can remember she rested peacefully through the entire night.

As rough as our relationship has been, it's been sad watching this strong, feisty little spitfire slowly fade... and I find myself mourning the bond we never seemed to manage. My mind has raced with memories, good and bad. In the end I have realized she did work, in her own way, to be a good mother, and I believe she loved me as much as she was able. She just didn't have that nurturing mother gene and to be fair, I wasn't an easy child.

I do, so very much, appreciate this wonderful, crazy, adventure of a life that wouldn't have been possible if she hadn't given me birth. Mom ushered me into my life on Earth, so it is only fitting I usher her out.

I believe we choose our parents and the family we are born into according to the lessons we need to learn to spiritually progress.

Walking the Camino will give me the grace to meditate on the lessons I learned from her, and try to think more about why I chose to come through her, and what things I need to continue to work on to try to make myself a better human being and mother.

Joe flies home to Portland today. I wish him a safe trip and will be happy to see him - it will be good to have someone to support me during these last difficult days. Joe and his siblings cared for their own mom at home when she passed a few years ago.

Only 13 more sleeps until we leave for Barcelona and so much to do!
Gotta spray my pack and bag, get loose ends tied up here, settle in my house sitter (my good Camino friend Patty Moak), and try to sort out all the COVID related stuff I need to do.

We are remaining flexible BUT our plan is to fly to Barcelona then grab a train to Manresa. This is a new place for me. According to Wikipedia, the houses of Manresa are arranged around the basilica of Santa Maria de la Seu.  St. Ignatius of Loyola stopped to pray in the town on his way back from Montserrat in 1522. He also read in solitude in a cave near the town for a year, which contributed to the formulation of his famous Spiritual Exercises. Because of this, the town is a place of pilgrimage for Catholics and their Semana Santa should be spectacular. Joe had a very strong Catholic upbringing and that's how I found out about Manresa. We have been to Montserrat and hope to walk the route from there someday - maybe next year.  But this year, we will spend Holy Week in Manresa, resting and enjoying the Semana Santa activities

The Monday after Easter, April 18, we will train/bus to Zaragoza for day or two of touristing. Then on to Canfranc Station on the upper Aragones Route. We will walk down the Aragones Route beginning April 20 and arrive in Pamplona in time to meet up with our Spring group of pilgrims.

I need this Camino.

See you on the trail!

I bought a new Kelly Kettle last week. It will be nice to be able to boil water and cook without having to buy propane and butane so often.

Today I lit up my Kelly Kettle for the first time. Here are some photos showing you what happened. It was a VERY windy day. The wind was really whipping around and I didn't choose the best place to do this. It took about 7 minutes for the water to boil.

At any rate, this worked GREAT and what a simple way to boil water or cook with nothing but a few sticks I picked up off the ground. It did make a lot of black smoke but that's probably because I used junky bark and leaves. This will be a great addition to my van. Also, if I were going to camp on a Camino route, I'd think about buying the smallest, most lightweight version and carrying it along so I could cook and make hot water safely.

My shiny new kettle

Be sure the whistle is pointing DOWN so you don't get a steam burn.

I just built a small fire in the pan using leaves, sticks, and paper I found on the ground. It really was a dirty fire and burned some nasty black smoke. I'll be more cautious what I use next time, but I'm learning.

I had some fat wood so I splintered a small piece to get the fire started.
It was incredibly windy, but the fire took off easily as it was contained in the pan.

I found a piece of 1x4 and splintered it.
This may be what was so smoky.

Fatwood. You can buy this and all you need
is a tiny piece to get the fire started.
You can also forage it if you're in the forest.

A piece of fatwood being split

I lit the fire.
It lit very easily.
Once it had just started to burn, I set the kettle on top.
It immediately took off and was roaring.
This is, after all, nothing more than a miniature rocket stove!
I took video but for some reason, it won't upload.

Once the kettle whistled, the water was boiling.
It took about 7 minutes from start to finish.
I think with practice I can get this down to 3-4 minutes.

All in all, I feel this was a purchase that was worth the cash.
I'm looking forward to using it in the wild
or in emergency situations where I need to boil water for safety
or for convenience when the power is out.

Now to get Joe to build the kitchen in the back . . .

Homemade Laundry Detergent

Those of you who have followed me a while will remember when I posted the recipe for making laundry detergent. Here is that link:

 Laundry Detergent

Yesterday I made a batch and this time I used ZOTE instead of Fels Naptha. The ZOTE comes in a package, is already grated, and it has a lemony fragrance.  I'm hoping it won't bother my MCS when it is finished.   If you use the ZOTE that is already grated, you only need to use 1/2 the box.  Here is the recipe again:

4 cups hot tap water
1/2 package ZOTE flakes or 1 bar ZOTE or 1 bar Fels Naptha (grated)

1 cup Arm and Hammer Washing Soda

1/2 cup 20 Mule Team Borax

You will also need a FIVE GALLON BUCKET. I've used buckets from Walmart, empty cat litter buckets work great, any 5 gallon bucket.

Bring the water to a boil.

Mix the grated soap into the nearly boiling water.

Stir until it is dissolved.

Add the Borax and Washing Soda.

Stir until dissolved.

Fill the bucket with hot water.

Set it aside overnight to cool.

In the morning you will have a bucket full of jelly-like soap.

Break up the gel with a long wooden spoon, or just stick your arm in like I do and break it all up into liquid again.

Put this in empty laundry soap containers. You will fill them 1/2 with this soap and 1/2 with water and shake well.

Use as you would any laundry detergent - about 1/4 cup per load.

Shake well before each use.

There are several videos on YouTube saying "DO NOT USE HOME MADE LAUNDRY DETERGENT!"     Their reasoning is because of a new fad (which is a very old practice) called "Stripping." They claim you'll get nasty brown water as the hand made soap and dirt is released from your clothes. It's baloney!  If you put your clean laundry in the bathtub and do the "stripping" after using ANY detergent, you'll get the same results, but you're led to believe it's from the home made soap. Just not true. I've used this for years and it has not ruined my clothes or my machine.

Anyway, the price of this 10 GALLONS of laundry detergent is about $2 - an incredible savings. That bucket will last me at least 6 months.

Here is the bucket I used this time and maybe you can see how thick the gel is by these photos:

Try it! You might like it!

Love,

Annie
